What is Takt Time?
In German, "Takt" means pulse or drumbeat. In lean manufacturing, Takt Time represents the maximum rate at which you must produce a product to satisfy customer demand.
Unlike cycle time (how fast a machine can run), takt time is entirely driven by customer sales.

The calculation is straightforward:
Takt Time = Net Available Time / Customer DemandLet's use an example:
- Shift Length: 8 hours (480 minutes)
- Breaks: Two 15-minute breaks and one 30-minute lunch (60 minutes total)
- Customer Demand: 210 units per shift
First, calculate Net Available Time:
Net Available Time = 480 mins - 60 mins = 420 minutes (25,200 seconds)Then, divide by the customer demand:
Takt Time = 25,200 seconds / 210 units = 120 seconds per unitThis means your line must pack or produce a completed unit every 120 seconds to avoid falling behind customer orders.
Implementing Takt Time in Excel
When modeling takt time in spreadsheets, keep these variables dynamic. Create separate input cells for Shift Time, Break Duration, and Daily Demand. Use conditional formatting to highlight cycle times that exceed takt time in red, alerting supervisors to bottleneck areas.
